Modern life is so easy. We have toothpaste, X-rays, Air Jordans, and Yelp. Life is nice. Through most of human history, though, people have had it tough. Bad breath. Getting the plague. Walking around barefoot. Having to go to a restaurant without first checking its reviews online — real rough stuff! But there are certain time periods that were even worse than all the others, and I thank my lucky stars I didn’t have to live through them. Here are some of the most unfortunate times to be alive.

1) Viking time

bloody vikings jpg(source)

The Vikings sound cool until you actually imagine being one or, even worse, being one of their enemies. Marauding invaders who sailed around from one frigid land to another, the vikings stole things and people and made everyone pretty miserable. “Consent is sexy” is not a phrase the Vikings were familiar with. But in these times, even being the most important Vikings didn’t make life easy — if you got sick, you were forced to go out into nature on your own. If you survived, you were allowed to return. If you didn’t survive, well, you couldn’t come back. No zombies allowed. When rich dudes died, one or two of their slaves “volunteered” to join them on that flaming boat to Valhalla. Basically, Viking time was just about violent death, eating fish, and being cold all the time. No, thank you.

2) The Ice Age

ice age gif(source)

The Ice Age wasn’t all talking mammoths and squirrels. In fact, as far as I know, the Ice Age had no talking mammoths OR squirrels. But there really were people who had to live their entire lives trudging around in the ice and snow, being like, “Wow I am so cold” and “I wonder if there was ever a time when it wasn’t this cold” and “What fun things are there to do during the Ice Age?” The answer: Nothing. Snowboarding hadn’t even been invented yet. The Ice Age definitely sucked.

3) World War II

bombed city jpg(source)

“World War” is not an exaggeration. World War II was all over the dang place. Europe? Of course. East Asia? Absolutely. The Pacific Islands? Yes. North Africa? Undoubtedly. North America? Not safe. South America? Seems far away, but still couldn’t avoid it. We really need to say thanks to our great-grandparents for dealing with this sh*t because honestly, I don't think we could've handled it. We’d be signing online petitions like, “Stop the Nazis now!” and sharing Upworthy videos about the Rape of Nanking with comments like, “omg someone should do something about this. The world is so f*cked rn.”

4) Peak slave trade: 1740-1810

slave trade jpg(source)

There was a time when most of the world was involved in the slave trade. You were probably from either a country buying slaves or selling slaves, and you were therefore either part of the problem or affected by it. Innocent people were kidnapped from western and central African countries by African slave traders, sold to European and American slave traders on the coast, and brought to South and Central America, the West Indies, North America, and Europe. Outside of the Trans-Atlantic trade, there was slavery everywhere else as well, making the world a place where most people were like, “yeah, slavery is cool with me! It's practical!” That was only a couple hundred years ago. Let that sink in.

5) Fall of the Roman Empire and the Dark Ages

roman fall png(source)

Let me put it this way — you know how Wal-Mart put every other store on Earth out of business? Imagine if Wal-Mart went out of business. You couldn’t buy anything! Anywhere! The Roman Empire trotted around the world, putting all the other great civilizations out of business. The Greeks, the Ancient Egyptians, the Carthaginians. All gone. Then the Roman Empire collapsed too, and nobody knew where to buy their sweatpants and family size bags of BBQ Lays. After the fall came the Dark Ages, which you know are bad right from the name. That’s just terrible marketing.

6) The year 2800, when robots control Earth

robocop robot gif(source)

This is gonna suck, y’all. And it’s coming. Robots will someday enslave us all and ride us around like horses. They’ll stick us in their back pockets, oblivious to our discomfort, in karmic retribution for all the iPhones we’ve sat on. It’s inevitable. Let’s just be glad we live now, right?

Seems to me like we’re pretty lucky to be alive today. The world looks more beautiful already! Are there any other time periods you’re glad you didn’t live in? Let me know @erikaheidewald or leave a comment!
You know that book “everything I need to know I learned in kindergarten?” Well, I wasn’t really paying attention to school back then, so it’s a good thing I watched a lot of cartoons and kids shows. These shows are put together to teach us important life lessons, and since they are for children, they try to do it in the simplest ways possible. Sometimes, when we’re older, it’s easy to forget the wisdom of simple things!

Which lesson do you think is the best? Do you live by these rules? Let us know in the comments!
Ahhh, Adventure Time - one of the strangest yet somehow most addictive cartoons around. While some people view it as a mini acid-trip for their eyes and mind, the show surprisingly has tons of inspirational quotes and good advice. Think of it sort of like Confucius on acid embodied into a swirl of colorful characters.

“Sucking at something is the first step to being sorta good at something” –Jake the Dog

life advice from Adventure Time jake the dog

(source)

Jake the Dog is kind of like your uncle who enjoys having one too many beers at the family cookout and ends up passing out in the middle of his karaoke routine. But underneath all the fart jokes and immature lessons lies a good and encouraging heart. Think of him as an outlet of spiritual guidance once you get past all the daft and sarcastic remarks, then put into a small yellow dog’s body. Jake the Dog’s words encourage that one should never give up. He and Rick Astley could probably do some major bonding.

“When bad things happen, I know you want to believe they are a joke, but sometimes life is scary and dark. That is why we must find the light” –BMO

life advice from Adventure Time bmo darkness

(source)

If Jake is like the drunken uncle of the family, then BMO is your small, annoying yet lovable cousin-who is also apparently the next Gandhi. While BMO maybe having a gender identity crisis, (s)he is still able to achieve positive and uplifting words, all the while keeping up an adorable appearance. Such big wise words from such a small box.

“I know who I am and I’ll know what I want if and when it comes along” – Fionna the Human

life advice from Adventure Time fionna

(source)

Though Fionna may be from an alternate universe created by another fictional character, her mindset and attitude is still completely intact! It’s good to be reminded that you don’t always have to know what you want in life as long as you know who you are and where you come from. (I don’t know if Fionna could ever truly understand who she actually is since she’s made up by the Ice King’s imagination, but that’s besides the point.)

“People make mistakes. It’s a part of growing up, and you never really stop growing” – Duke of Nuts

life advice from Adventure Time duke of nuts

(source)

While the Duke of Nuts appears to lack depth, one should never underestimate the wise knowledge of a Duke, even if he is a little…nuts (I apologize for my awful pun.) The Duke of Nuts reminds us that it’s okay to mess up every now and then, and that no matter how old you are you’re going to make mistakes.

“Sometimes you want someone and you want to kiss and be with them, but you can’t because responsibility demands sacrifice.” – Princess Bubblegum

life advice from Adventure Time love sacrafice

(source)

Playing into her part of being a good female protagonist, Princess Bubblegum is here to give advice about love and relationships. Though with an appearance pinker than Pepto Bismol and a name as sweet as ‘Princess Bubblegum’, what do you expect? But still, her words are truer than blue, or, um, pink in this case I suppose.

“Even if we like each other, we’re still going to hurt each other” – Flame Princess

life advice from Adventure Time flame princess

(source)

The sweet but aggressive princess puts words about love, platonic or not, in a sweet but aggressive way. The Flame Princess seems to be putting away her typical fiery sass (no pun intended) to share a loving and warm (pun completely intended) quote.

“The answer was too simple and I was too smart to see it” – Princess Bubblegum

life advice from Adventure Time too smart

(source)

We all have those moments where you think you lost something so you tear up your entire house to try and find it, just to find that it was sitting in an obvious place the entire time, and Princess Bubblegum is no exception. Just a friendly reminder that sometimes the answer isn’t as complicated as you think, and that sometimes you actually set your phone on your dresser, not underneath your dog’s bed like you might have thought.

“No one flicks me in the butt without my consent!” – Finn the Human

life advice from Adventure Time pinch the butt

(source)

And finally and probably the most importantly, good ole advice that definitely can be transferred to many real life situations…..Okay, maybe not many real life situations, but it still teaches an important lesson and reminds you to never let anyone flick your butt (in whatever sense you want to think of that as) without your permission! Adventure Time: Subtly teaching kids about the dangers of molestation since 2010!

Which advice was the most inspiring? Let us know in the comments!
Sure, Adventure Time can be super weird, but occasionally, some wise pieces of advice sneak in. Why? BECAUSE ADVENTURE TIME IS WRITTEN BY ADULTS. All writers have to draw upon personal experience when creating a script — it’s part of the creative process. It seems that the writers of Adventure Time may have gone through some serious sh*t (bad breakups, existential crisis, etc.) because the stuff these characters talk about is DEEP. Our moms may say we need to stop "watching that fat purple blob and go outside for once", but what they don’t know is that we are becoming better humans by watching Adventure Time.

On Getting What you Want

adventure time life lesson dance

(source)

When Princess Bubblegum invites Ricardio out to dance, Finn is jealous that she didn’t ask him. Jake tells Finn to stop waiting for other people to give him permission. He should get out there and do what he wants! So, the next time you don’t get asked to a school dance, go anyways and have the best time — because you can! DISCLAIMER: This advice does not apply to killing or stealing.

On Dating

 adventure time lesson dating

(source)

Sure, this statement about dating is dark, but at least Finn understands the gravity of playing with hearts! Maybe I’ve just been burned ONE too many times, but it seems like a lot of people are careless when it comes to other people's romantic feelings. If we all realized that we or the person we’re seeing could get hurt in the process, perhaps we’d be more conscientious before entering into relationships. ARE YOU LISTENING, BRIAN? YOU SHOULD THINK ABOUT HOW YOU TREAT PEOPLE WHO CARE ABOUT YOU. *Clears Throat* Nothing to see here, folks, nothing to see here.

On Dying

adventure time born to die

(source)

Here, Finn is referring to the fact that our bodies are designed to release certain chemicals like dimethyltryptamine (DMT) during near-death experiences. This means that death is as much a part of our body’s programming as digesting and breathing. Why, then, do we act as if it doesn’t exist? The more we embrace our eventual demise, the more we can live in the present. I think I heard Oprah say that once. Oprah and Adventure Time are pretty much the only sources I trust for life advice.

On Focusing on What’s Real

adventure time problems lesson gif

(source)

This is said by the wisest Adventure Time character, Jake, in the "Puhoy" episode when Finn is obsessing over Flame Princess not laughing at his joke. Personally, I’ve NEVER done that and have NO idea what that feels like and I NEVER over-think things and I am well aware that everything is NOT about me. Uhhhhh ... as someone who spends a lot of time in my head instead the real world, about 99% of my problems are things I’ve completely made up. Please tell me I’m no not the only one? THANK YOU, JAKE, FOR PUTTING MY ISSUES INTO PERSPECTIVE SO ELOQUENTLY.

On Inner Beauty

adventure time beautiful lesson

(source)

Reeeeaaaal smooth, Finn! This quote is from the "Gotcha" episode where Finn saves Lumpy Space Princess from the evil mirrors. Note to all the dudes out there: if you say this to a girl, she will inevitably say, "Awwwww" and love you forever. But it IS true — looking good isn't all about selfies. It comes from being comfortable and confident in yourself (and your brain and stuff)! You’re going to write this Adventure Time quote on your bathroom mirror in lipstick and Instagram it, aren’t you? So predictable.

On Following Your Heart

adventure time follow your heart lesson(source)

This quote was said by the Receptor at the Institute of So Und in the "James Baxter the Horse" episode. It’s a basic life lesson, but it’s good to hear nonetheless.

BASICALLY, WE ALL JUST NEED TO CHILL OUT

What is the favorite thing you’ve learned from Adventure Time? Let us know in the comments below!

When Disney isn’t spreading the message that women should wait for an ultimately not so great man to rescue them, step mothers are evil, and happily-ever-after is a real thing, it can actually teach us some great lessons! We may have over-looked the following slices of wisdom the first time we watched the movies, but there’s no doubt they’ve left imprints on our hearts. *Walt Disney winks at camera* Here are some of the best lessons Disney movies have engrained upon our young brains!

Your struggles will make you stronger

mulan flower grows adversity quote lesson(source)

If you’re going through a hard time, just remember that in the end it will make you a better person. Like the Chinese Emperor says in Mulan — "The flower that blooms in adversity is the most rare and beautiful of all." So whether you’re trying to save China or just get through the next day, know that you are being primed for something amazing. (Or at least you’ll be rare and beautiful?)

Don’t underestimate yourself

inspirational quote disney christopher pooh(source)

No one knows Pooh better than Christopher Robbin! He sees Pooh for who he really is and knows he sometimes lacks confidence (don’t we all). In this scene, Pooh learns that he can accomplish much more than he ever thought possible. And the same goes for you! I’m not going to be here to tell you this every day, so don’t forget how amazing you are!

Embrace your past

the past can hurt learn from it lion king(source)

Simba’s dad died, you guys! Right in front of him! That’s enough to make anyone depressed for the rest of their life. But, like Rafiki said, you can either run from your past or learn from it. The painful things that happen to us don’t need to keep us living in the outskirts of town with a meerkat and a warthog. As hard as it may seem, you have to learn from the past and then move forward.

Be Courageous

disney quote brave life lesson(source)

In Brave, Merida chose to defy tradition and not get married right away. Sure, this led to some complications, but in the end, she listened to her heart. The movie teaches us that we can choose our path and create our own lives once we step into courage. There is absolutely no one who can keep you from becoming the person you want to be!

Never give up

cinderella life lessons keep believing(source)

Ah yes, the classic line from Cinderella. Keep on believing, and the dream will come true! Listen, on the way to your goal, things are gonna be real hard. Your stepsisters will tear up your dress, you’ll have to leave by midnight, and you’ll forget your shoe, but if you let the hard stuff convince you to give up, you’ll never know if you could have actually made it. And, like Cinderella says, if you hold on long enough, it will happen.

Have no limits

disney inspirational quote(source)

Yeah ... so ... a rat wanted to be a great chef so he just went out and did it. Nobody thought that could be a thing, but did Remy let himself be deterred by haters? NO. And you shouldn’t either. I’m sure a lot of you have obstacles in your way, but none of you are rats trying to be successful in a human profession. SO LIVE LIMITLESS!

Just Keep Going!

just keep swimming inspirational quote(source)

Dory may not be the brightest bulb, but she sure gets some things right. Even if you’re not one hundred percent sure where you’re going, it’s important to keep moving! Keep at it, and something will click eventually. Don’t fall into patterns of stagnation. Just keep swimming. (Or writing, or drawing, or whatever it is that you do.)

Love is sacrifice

some people worth melting for disney(source)

Elsa chose to go live by herself in isolation instead of opening up to her sister. Olaf, in contrast, shows love by being willing to basically die for his friend. We all need each other, and sometimes it’s messy and sometimes you get hurt (or melt), but it’s worth it in the end. NOW GO HUG SOMEONE YOU LOVE!
